A common format for the writing of history in Byzantium (qq.v.), in which events are recorded year by year. World chronicles, which begin with the creation of the world, were particularly popular, and they were often translated into Latin, Church Slavonic, and Georgian. The authorship and readership of world chronicles were most often monastic (e.g., the works of John Malalas, George Synkellos, George Hamartolos, Glykas, and the so-called Chronicon Paschale [qq.v.]), which extends from Adam to the year 628. However, there were other kinds of chronicles, including those that concentrate on a particular region, such as the Chronicle of Galaxeidi that focuses on the region around Galaxeidi, a town on the northern shore of the Gulf of Corinth [q.v.]), and the Chronicle of Monemvasia (q.v.) which deals with the Peloponnesos (q.v.). The conceptual difference between chronicle and history seems distinct to modern eyes, but to the Byzantines it was not.
